Program Mission

The primary goals of the association (LMNA) shall be to coordinate the educational programs and activities of the various Louisiana Master Naturalist chapters across the state, to assist the general public to a better understanding of the natural world, and to promote conservation and preservation of native plants and animal life and habitats within the State of Louisiana.

Program Description (include how it meets membership criteria)

LMNA, in its role of umbrella organization, will cause the various Louisiana chapters of the association to meet the requirements of ANROSP membership by adhering to all four ANROSP membership requirements: 1) have a natural resource focus, 2) be community-based, 3) offer a minimum of 20 hours of service-oriented education and training, and 4) may not be for-profit organization. These goals are set forth in the bylaws of LMNA and have been agreed upon by representatives from the five (thus far) Louisiana Master Naturalist chapters on July 6, 2015.

Program Partners

Louisiana Master Naturalists of Greater New Orleans, as the lead chapter for the state organization, has had a MOU with Louisiana State University Extension Service and AgCenter, with Loyola Univeristy of New Orleans, and with Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. These agreements are now being shifted to LMNA as the lead affiliate with these supporting agencies.

Curriculum (general objectives and topics, types of instructors, and planned time frame)

Trainees are required to attend a minimum of 8 of the 10 training workshops (plus introductory and final/closure workshops) and score 80% or better on the final exam. These workshops are taught in various ecological zones wihtin the chapter-specific portion of Louisiana in the form of guided field trips and intermittent classroom discussions. Due to the geological situation of Southern Louisiana, an appropriate emphasis is placed on coastal preservation and restoration.

STEPS TO BECOME A CERTIFIED LOUISIANA MASTER NATURALIST:

To become a certified Louisiana Master Naturalist, a participant must fulfill the following:

• Register for a course and attend at least 8 of the 10 formal training workshops that combine field and classroom instruction, as well as the closing gathering. We strongly encourage attendance at all 10 workshops.
• 20 hours of approved volunteer service completed within six months following the course's closing session; LMN-GNO allows that volunteering be done in virtually all venues where natural history support is needed, such as state agencies, parks and refuges, schools, scouts, nature/environmental centers, nature programs of not-for-profits, summer camps, etc.
• 8 hours of advanced training by the same date.
