Program Mission
Our Mission: to cultivate awareness, understanding, and stewardship of the Wenatchee River region by developing an active corps of well-informed community volunteers.
Program Description (include how it meets membership criteria)
The Chelan-Douglas Land Trust invites you to embark on a wonder-filled adventure by becoming a Wenatchee Naturalist. The 12-week course is offered annually by Wenatchee Valley College Continuing Education and includes 4 Saturday field trips. Field trips explore habitats along the White, Entiat, and Wenatchee River corridors, guided by expert guest field scientists. Every class includes hands-on activities and practice using a field journal. Class size is limited to 24 adults and is designed for non-scientists. Tuition includes supplies, a field journal, and loaned equipment. A nature journaling workshop is part of the course, and students bring and use their journal to field trips and activity labs. Students select a field site and visit it (minimum of 30 minutes per week) and used guided weekly prompts to take field journal notes and sketches. At the final class, each student shares an excerpt of their journal.

Over the 12-week course, students new friends, discover lovely local places to visit again, and gain new eyes for the natural wonders of North Central Washington. This class is designed to inspire a deeper connection to the wonders of our valley and to bring new sources of joy to everyday life. Throughout the course, students are introduced to an array of local conservation organizations and citizen science projects, to make it fun and easy to select 20+ hours of volunteer work, to complete after finishing the coursework. Volunteer categories include stewardship, citizen science, program administrative support, and conservation education. Teachers can sign up for 50 clock hours and have the option to do volunteering within their classroom. The Wenatchee Naturalist mission is to cultivate awareness, understanding, and stewardship of the Wenatchee River region by developing an active corps of well-informed community volunteers.

Wenatchee Naturalist "Voluntary" Volunteer Pledge: Upon course completion, participants are asked to honor their commitment to volunteer with a conservation organization of their choice, serving 20+ hours over the course within a 1-2 year period. Starting in March 2016, service pens will be awarded for 3 volunteer levels: 20+ hours, 50+ hours, and 100+ hours within the two years upon course completion. Each January, volunteer hour records are requested of Wenatchee Naturalists within their 2 year post-course time period.

8 times per year, an enews is electronically mailed to all former Wenatchee Naturalists, listing local programs, classes, new resources, volunteer opportunities for stewardship, citizen science, and education, available through many local conservation organizations and agencies.
